Wildlife in Kerala
Kerala Wildlife : The God’s Own Country is the most beautiful state of South India which is jam-packed with fantastic attractions which tempts the tourists all over. It is a place which suits everyone’s interest whether a nature lover or adventure seeker, religious or fun loving everyone has something for themselves. But primarily Kerala is a state which is internationally famed for its natural opulence. Beaches, backwaters, waterfalls, lakes, gardens, emerald hills, it has almost all of nature’s form But not only that there are some other features too contribute in making this state beautiful. Spice plantations, hill stations, temples, authentic food, culture and traditions, art forms are some of the things which glorify this enchanting state of South India. All of this highly contributes in Kerala tourism but one of the features which are not mentioned above is the wildlife. The wildlife of Kerala is among the dominating aspects which tempts the tourists to this place. It is understood that a state with full of nature will be equally rich in wildlife also.
There are a number of wildlife sanctuaries and national parks which decorates the place. The national parks here are replete with numerous of wild species like tigers, elephants, sambars, leopards etc. Wildlife enthusiast can find wildlife in every nook and cranny of Kerala but some of the best places which house the glorious wilds of the state are mentioned below.
Silent valley national Park: is spread along the evergreen tropical rain forest. It is believed that it is India’s last living rain tropical forest. It even has some traces of virgin forests. The place is obviously rich in wild species but the most dominating ones are elephants, wild dogs, tigers, flying squirrel etc.
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary: It is one of the major wildlife destinations in Kerala and in the whole of India. The sanctuary is elegantly designed with thick jungle and lush green plantation. The serene pastoral landscape and bewitching sights mesmerizes its visitors while exploring the place. Besides the natural beauty one can enjoy boating in the eminent manmade lake present in the premises. Apart from the birds one can even spot water birds and some migratory birds too. Whether you are wildlife lover or not, the place is a must visit for all kind of tourists exploring Kerala.
Thattekad Bird sanctuary: This exceptional sanctuary is fringed by numerous branches of Periyar River which invites the bird from distant parts to nest here. There are myriads of beautiful birds inhabiting here among which the most prominent ones which affirms to be a delight to eyes are Malabar grey hornbill, heron, myna, jungle owl, egret, wood pecker and some frequent birds of the local. One can even spot some of the rarest species of bird like rose billed roller and Ceylon frog mouth etc.
Idduki wildlife sanctuary: This is one of the dominating places where one can explore the wilds of Kerala. The sanctuary is positioned elegantly between the two prominent rivers of Kerala main rivers christened as Periyar and Cheruthoni. Here you can behold the beauty of the exceptional wild species of Kerala in their natural habitat. The setting of this sanctuary is amazing as it is surrounded by a lake which endows a panoramic view that soothes the eyes.
Chinnar wildlife sanctuary, Aralam wildlife sanctuary, Peppara wildlife sanctuary, Peechi wild life sanctuary, Neyyar wild life sanctuary are some of the other prominent places where you can quench your thirst of the wilds.
